A Lenten Prayer for Justice & Compassion

Blessed Creator, here we are again, stumbling along a Lenten path, feeling our way in dusky twilight all too often. Walk beside us, we pray, as we struggle for justice where it seems feeble. Fill our souls with the power of Your love, to overcome all loves of power.

Prayer by Bob Howard, Disciples of Christ Tradition

“Blessed Creator, here we are again, stumbling along a Lenten path, feeling our way in dusky twilight all too often.  Walk beside us, we pray, as we struggle for justice where it seems feeble.  Fill our souls with the power of Your love, to overcome all loves of power.  Help those who cross borders fleeing violence, to find safety, shelter, and welcome in order to build new lives.

Turn the hearts of stone that sit in legislative chambers into warm hearts of compassion, realizing with a holy shock that those denied AFDC, affordable healthcare, jobs with a living wage, and paths to the citizenship that would enable them to throw themselves into building a stronger nation for all — are human beings just like anybody.

Fill us, who long not just to make a difference in the world, but to make a different world, with a holy impatience for Your justice in this world, in this time, for all human beings made in Your image.  Give us grit for the struggle.

Let us make this our Lenten Continuing Resolution (LCR): to press our world to give up injustice for Lent!  And then forget it forever!  And then fill us with Holy Spirit power to make that our daily spiritual discipline. Caminemos con Jesús!  Amen.”
